Welcome and Introductions
Danielle Rebar, Glenwood President, introduced the new 2010/2011 Board Members for this school year.
Treasurer’s Report
Janet Shattuck, Treasurer, gave the financial report from the 2009/2010 and the 2010/2011 budgeted projections. Due to other issues we needed to discuss, it was decided to approve a detailed budget at the next meeting. The budget was voted on and approved. Copies provided upon request.
Principal’s Report
David Kennedy, Glenwood Principal, will present a Glenwood Heights wish list in October for the next General Meeting.
JoDee McMillen, Laurin Principal gave the Principal Report for Laurin:
1) Laurin’s Laminator is broken and cannot be repaired. This is an item Laurin would like an immediate replacement of and asked for approval from the PTO to provide a new Laminator for Laurin. The estimated cost of the Laminator is approximately $2,200. It was suggested the Cookie Dough Fundraising money, of approximately $6,700, would be appropriate to cover the cost of this item, as it was a Laurin Fundraiser. A motion to approve a new Laminator for Laurin was made, seconded and approved. Laurin will continue to price the Laminator and let Janet Shattuck, Treasurer know the specific amount.
2) JoDee McMillen would like to put together a Parent/Principal Advisory Group together. She has sent out information to parents and has only received one response. She and David Kennedy, Glenwood Principal, will meet and decide if the two schools may combine this group. The goal is to get feedback/ideas/discussion with parents on how the school/parents address topics such as: academics, bullying, social events, specific needs, etc… Please email JoDee McMillen at mcmillen.jodee@bgsd.k12.wa.us.org if interested or have questions.
Old Business
The Ice Cream Social went well and had a great turn out of parents. It was mentioned that the PTO table should be placed next to the ice cream table next year.
The Friday Folder order has been put on hold. The office still has around 20 left from last year and we have been looking in to the total cost of getting more.
At the PTO Board meeting, held September 14, 2010, the PTA Regional Director, Christine Gillingham, came and presented information regarding the PTA and what is means to join the organization. This was an information gathering meeting to learn more about the difference between the PTO and PTA. The PTO Board would like to gather more information and welcome parent input and information about the two organizations about the benefits or concerns of either.
Ongoing Business
Jamie Blick, Glenwood Events/Fundraising Coordinator, gave an updated report on the Payback Book fundraiser.
1) Volunteers for collecting the envelopes turned in to teachers are needed. Please contact Jamie at jjblick5@comcast.net to help.
2) Laurin would also like to have some Payback books available at the office for those who may not have children at Glenwood, but would like to purchase a book. Jamie will provide a lock box for Laurin to keep the orders in. Laurin will also email parents to inform them they are available at the office.
Danielle Rebar advised that several parents had asked that the PTO send flowers or in some other way help out a family who recently lost a child who attended Laurin Middle School. She opened this up for discussion, but advised that in the past the PTO denied such requests based on the principle that PTO monies should only be spent in furtherance of its mission of “supporting the efforts of the school in providing a quality education for all students.” Parents purchase PTO fundraiser items and donate money based on the assumption that the money will be spent toward that effort. There was a lot of discussion about how best to show support and care from the PTO, including a fundraiser or possibly coordinating with the school on some type of memorial. It was suggested that the PTO might want to come up with a standard. It was also suggested that the family should be given more time to grieve before being approached with any of these ideas. The PTO board will revisit this at some point in the future when the time is appropriate.
Upcoming Events
Next General PTO Meeting: Monday, October 18, 3:30 p.m., in the Glenwood Media Center
Harvest Festival: Saturday, October 23, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Laurin Gym and Commons:
1) Evelyn Weed is the Chair Person for this event. Many parent volunteers are needed for things such as, set up, clean up, running games, food, etc. She is gathering a committee to help meet on a weekly basis (maybe two times per week as it nears) to help with the planning.
2) Kathy Weinberg, Laurin President, is working with the Laurin Middle School ASB student group to help with planning/set up/running a special haunted-fun house. The hope is to get more involvement from students/parents of the middle school and continue to build a community feeling between the two schools. The money raised for this fun house will go towards the “Cozy Kids Coats” charity. The ASB will help with advertising and encouraging this to be a family event since many families attending both Glenwood Primary and Laurin Middle School.
Glenwood Family Night: Friday, November 5th, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., in the Laurin Commons. The Movie, Toy Story 3, will be played on the large screen.
