  • Logo item sale are going well. Drill team shirts are a PTO item as well.
  • Staff appreciation – expenses still coming in, but well within budget.
  • Bookfairs are completed for this year.

Motion to approve treasurers approve –all in favor. Report approved.

Ongoing Business:

Principal’s Report – the Vice Principals from both schools gave a short report.

Principals thanked PTO for teacher appreciation week. Fantastic experience with student led conference at Laurin. Laurin will be going to do that from now on.

Next week will start MSP (Measurement of Student Progress) test – the new WASL test.

Glenwood teachers really appreciated the banners the kids made at Cubby Club and teacher appreciation week was very well received. Glenwood had a Japanese drum assembly and the students really enjoyed it.

Old Business:

Lisa Henry/Cookie Dough: Evergreen Fundraisers is great, very helpful and so easy to work with. We are definitely working with them from now on. Lisa is planning on chairing it next year also. Kids were very happy with the prizes. Lisa suggested keeping the sale at the same time for next year – around spring break.

Glenwood Ice Cream Sunday Bar/Jamie Blick: Overbought water and ice cream, but they could return the water. A lot of chocolate syrup left also. Everyone thought it went well and the kids loved it. Jamie would add more time at the end of the open house so the families could have more time to enjoy their ice cream.

Teacher Appreciation Week – Glenwood: Jamie Blick/Kim Dunford: Staff appreciation is going really well.  The big luncheon is tomorrow (Friday).  Lots of parents are bringing in food – salad, lasagna, bread and desserts.  The Fairchild family, owners of Pacific Perks, donated coffee for everyone. Lots of parent support.

Lisa Henry advised that Laurin staff appreciation week went really well. The salad luncheon was a hit. We should consider that again for next year.  For next year, more coordination needs to be done to take an inventory of what is available in the PTO closet for these events such as plates, cups and utensils and then supplies should be used at both schools if possible.

Upcoming Events:

May 20th/Kindergarden Orientation – PTO plans to speak to parents at the orientation.  Parents will be invited to a “Tissues and Tea” breakfast after dropping their kindergartener off on the first day of school.

Chucky Cheese Fundraiser Night – May 27th.  Fliers from Chuck E Cheese have not yet arrived at Glenwood. We need to figure out if we want Chucky Cheese to make an appearance at Glenwood.  Some parents did not think it was a good idea.  Principals will let us know.

PTO Board for next year:

Danielle Rebar offered a written job description of all board positions if anyone was interested in reviewing it.  She advised that people had expressed interest in filling all of the positions for next year except Laurin Co-President and Glenwood Volunteer Coordinator.  A request was made for volunteers to fill these positions.  Kathy Weinberg volunteered to be Laurin Co-President.  No one volunteered to fill the Glenwood Volunteer Coordinator position.  Danielle advised that the Volunteer Coordinator position was not a required position to fill in order for the PTO to continue next year, so filling this position can be done at a later time.

Positions voted in tonight:

  • Glenwood Co-President: Danielle Rebar, self nomination, Kim 2nd. All in favor – approved
  • Laurin Co-President: Kathy Weinberg; Self nomination, motion by Joan. All in favor – approved
  • Treasurer: Janet Shattuck – Motion to approve/sandy – all in favor – approved
  • Secretary: Sandy Cain – Motion to approve/Kim – all in favor – approved
  • Laurin Vice President: Amanda Elliot/nomination and 2nd – all in favor – approved
  • Glenwood Vice President: Kim Dunford/nomination and 2nd – all in favor – approved.

Other Items:

Laurin Reader Board – The PTO would like to make use of the Laurin reader board in front of the school.  Steve Hoskins advised that it’s in bad shape – 23 days of rain didn’t help. Apparently no one has time to deal with the reader board and it’s difficult to put up letters with the pole.  Laurin does have a ladder that the PTO can use.  PTO will try to get someone to help with the board so we can utilize it next year.

June will be a “final blast” PTO meeting, trying to get a lot of parents there to review new ideas for fundraisers etc.

Mike Maloney asked if PTO would consider replenishing the supply of Glenwood folders. The inventory is dwindling down and they need more. They would fall under Logo items too.  It’s not a profit thing – its break even. PTO will buy them but we need to see a minimum. Sue has all the information and they will follow up. Jamie mentioned putting on PTO website on them. There was a motion to approve the folder purchase. Motion made/2nd and passed.

Glenwood Reader Board – on the corner.  Tree needs to be cut back and letter holders need to be repaired. Danielle received one bid for 400 or 500 dollars last year. Danielle will try to get multiple bids on it.

Meeting adjourned @ 7:50 pm.

Sandy Cain – Secretary

Secretary’s Report:

Minutes from the last meeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:

Cookie Dough Fundraiser was a success.  There were a couple of returned checks.  There was a $7.50 fee for each returned check.

$10 was paid to renew our PTO license, which is due every year.

Logo Items had good sales.

Staff Appreciation was well received and under budget.

Treasurer’s report was approved.

Principal’s Report:

Eric Hogland, Glenwood Principal and JoDee McMillen, Laurin Principal, reported that both schools are currently busy wrapping things up for the end of the school year and planning for next year.

A Glenwood parent, “Mr. Joe”, father of a 3rd grade student, helped plan a surprise visit from the United States Coast Guard.   They landed a MH-60 Jayhawk search and rescue helicopter and let the kids look and ask questions.  A safe distance from students, the helicopter took off, as it pulled up one of the rescue swimmers in to the helicopter.  This surprise had been in the works since December of 2009.  It was very exciting for everyone in attendance.

Laurin will have many students in band involved in the Jr. Rose Parade.   They have practiced very hard and the school is very proud of them!

Laurin also provided a day for 4th Grade students to come visit Laurin for a mentorship day in order to acquaint them to Laurin for next year. They were introduced to students and staff and given a tour.  They were also given popsicles.

Laurin is waiting for the SOAR contract to be sent.  It will be due around August, when the contract renews.  It was determined at a previous meeting the SOAR program is a line item in the budget and not part of the wish list.

Old Business:

Chuck E Cheese Fundraiser was held on the last Thursday in May.   $369.00 was made from families buying pizza and tokens that evening.  It was mentioned that stickers might be handled differently next year, to avoid confusion.
Glenwood donated copies of the flyers announcing the fundraiser.

Danielle, Glenwood Co-President, spoke at the Kindergarten Orientation.  She told parents about the opportunities available when getting involved with the PTO.  She gave information about how many fun and helpful activities are provided by the PTO, along with direct support to the schools’ “wish lists”. 20 parents signed PTO volunteer forms.

A motion was approved to purchase 500 new Friday Folders in the amount of, approximately, $550. Thank you to Jamie Blick for researching the cost.

LRC funds- Mouse and the Motorcycle – $814.00 (this year)
- Glenwood paid ½ of cost and asked for ½ from the PTO funds.   A motion was approved to use Popcorn money and Winterhawk fundraiser money to help fund program.
- Next year we may do earlier marketing of this school wide reading program and ask for families to sponsor children in order to help offset costs.

New Business:

The PTO would like to change meeting times next year to right after school so teachers could more easily participate and still have 4-5 meetings in the evening for general meetings.  The PTO also posts every meeting’s minutes on the PTO website.

There are a few open positions on the PTO needed for next year:

-Volunteer Coordinator for Glenwood:
This person would be responsible for helping to gather volunteers for events by
phone calls and using a master email account, along with working with the chair
person on events.

- Events and Fundraising Committee:
Jamie Blick has volunteered to be the coordinator. It would be helpful to have a committee gather information and present new ideas to PTO.

- Grant Writer Position available

Blue volunteer sheets were given to those attending the meeting describing different events proposed for next year and which need people to chair these events.  Without chair persons, the events will not be held. – Harvest Fest is the biggest event needing a chair person.

The goal for Laurin next year is to try and facilitate more parent involvement in the middle school.   It was proposed that the ASB program at Laurin already has some existing programs that could use more PTO support and involvement, which could help improve parent participation.  Jodee McMillen, Laurin Principal, will make a list of next year’s ASB activities to present to the PTO.

One example was given for a chair person needed for an event idea:  Tissue and Tea: Welcoming new parents for the first day of Kindergarten. Serve tea, coffee, cookies. Having more than one person chair an event is helpful.

A Thank you to Lisa Henry, Laurin PTO Co- President, was given by incoming
Glenwood PTO Co-President, Danielle Rebar.  Kathy Weinberg will take over as
Laurin PTO Co-President for the following 2010/2011 school year.

Secretary Report:

Minutes from last meeting approved.

Treasurer’s Report:

Treasurer’s report was approved.

Ongoing Business:

Laurin Movie Night was really fun, but turnout was not as good as expected.  There were about 80 in attendance.  Laurin ASB sold popcorn and many hot dogs and other concessions were sold. Leftover candy, etc. will be used at Glenwood Movie Night this coming Friday.

Glenwood Wish List: Specifications on computers need to meet minimum requirements for Glenwood.  Specifications are the same as presented to the PTO in October.  There is not enough money in the budget to purchase the requested 7 laptops at $1400 each.  In addition, there are other items on the wish list that have not yet been paid for.  We agreed to remove the laptop request from the wish list for this year.  Request may be resubmitted in the fall when more fundraising will take place.

Money for Mileage Club discussed.

Motion to approve $1896.14 to Glenwood for wish list items.

Read Across America going great.  Kids are walking around the school with their books and are excited about reading the story as a group.

Upcoming Events:

Lisa reported that Laurin cookie dough sale will be starting after spring break.

Discussion about Spaghetti/Bingo Night at Glenwood.  This year we may just do a dinner and bingo and no auction.  No one has stepped up to chair the event and no donations have been gathered thus far.  We will possibly have the event in May or early June.  Principal Hoglund will check the calendar and get back to us with possible dates.  We are still looking for chairpersons for this event.

New Business:

There was a discussion of fund raising opportunities for the next school year.  A Chuck E. Cheese fundraiser will be planned for June by Jamie Blick.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:48 pm.
